Thank you Sami:
I am so glad you got to go.
All your information was very helpful. No we have not gone yet but want to
plan on going in November and will be hosting a trip if we have enough
people going. We need at least 20 people to go.
Information will be posted soon, once I am finished doing my tourism board
training on Spain. But I have known a lot about Spain for a long time, just
never been there.
That is correct Spain is very accessible one of the most in Europe. If
anyone is interested in going write me off list for more information. This
is through my agency and not a trip for travel and tourism.
Also great with Guide Dogs. They are part of the World Blind Union, and if
you have a chance to go this Summer after the convention the World Blind
Union is having for the 1st time in the USA they will be having their
General Assembly at the Rosen Center.
It will be held in August, I am trying to go there when we move to Orlando
in July.
The buses, trains, etc is very accessible. They are very eager in Spain to
the make sure everyone can enjoy themselves.
Sami, how long did you spend in Spain. Did you do all the Tapas Restaurants,
go to Bullfights or Flamenco Dancing.

Hi Cheryl and all,
You probably won't believe this, but this summer I actually had the honor of
visiting the home country of one of your favorite authors! Yes, I really
did. This past June I graduated from high school, and the next month, for
my graduation gift, we spent ten days in Spain. During our first few days
there, we visited the city of Alcala de Henares, the birthplce of Senor
(Mr.) Miguel de Servantes. Although I've never read any books written by
this writer, there were many landmarks dedicated to him. I really enjoyed
staying in Alcala de Henares as well as the other cities we visited on our
trip. Spain is a beautiful country overall.
Also, by the way, just in case you're curious, Spain is extremely accessible
to the blind if you're going out and about! I'm not joking! One thing they
have is that in the cities such as Madrid, (though not that common in the
more rural areas from what I've
seen) there are bird sounds that go off when the traffic light turns green,
without you having to do anything! That's a really convenient way to know
when you can cross the street without having to pay attenity much to the
traffic, whether blind or sighted. Another thing is, when you're buying
subway tickets in Madrid, you have the option of having the ticket machine
to talk so you know what you're doing. You do need to turn that feature on
manually, though, so you might still require some assistance.
The company behind all this is an organization called Once, which is
basically Spain's version of the NFB. My family and I wanted to stop and
visit, but the problem was that there were many small offices in the same
areas rather than just a large office in one, so we couldn't decide on where
we wanted to go.
Cheryl, if you still would like to proceed in this project of taking anyone
who is willing to Spain, I would strongly encourage you to do so for the
reasons I've stated. Just curious, have you ever gone to Spain before? If
you have, I appologize for giving information that you might have already
noticed, but giving some background for people who man not have ever gone
there.
I hope you all found my information useful and thank you all for sharing
your experiences of going to another country or city of your favorite
authoears as well. That was an excellent article by the way, Cheryl!
Thanks,
Sami

Hi Cheryl,
I don't think I've explicitly chosen to visit a destination
because I've read about it, but it's a really neat idea and I
can see why it might be a draw and encourage reluctant travellers
to travel.
However, I did once go on a literary pub crawl in Dublin, which
tangentially links to this idea. A couple of actors showed us
various literary landmarks in the city (some of those from
Ulysses obviously but also famous authors' stomping grounds),
and performed scenes from Irish literature as we went round.
Unfortunately it was freezing cold and raining, so the visits to
hostelries to consume Guinness and the occasional whisky chasers
(well the weather was inclement) were much needed.
Cheers,
Ed

Good morning everyone:
I am posting information from my weekly enewsletter that I sent
out to
all the readers from Echevarria Travel and I thought you might
find it
interesting.
The reason it was written is because, I get many blind people
who ask
me why I should travel, I cannot see anything because I am
totally blind.
Did you ever read a book from your favorite author either
fiction or
non-fiction and your mind goes wondering or you imagine what it
might
be like to visit places in these books.
Like my 2 favorite authors are Earnest Hemingway, especially for
his
writings for the news, remember he was a correspondent in
Spanish
Civil War the issues in Spain. He also wrote about Cuba. My
favorite
book from him is still "For Whom The Bell Tolls" if you
haven't read
it. It is still one of the greats. About an American volunteer
fighting Franco's fascist forces.
Also my favorite book that was turned into a movie and a musical
Don
Quixote; you may know it as "Man of La Mancha" by Miguel de
Cervantes
Saavedra in 1605 and 1615.
There are other places I want to go, because I have read about
them.
We are actively learning about Spain, so we can take some of you
or others there.
The point of the information is that, even if you are blind, you
want
to explore the things you read.
It might take you longer to get there, because you are on a
fixed income.
Guess what! Blind or not, we are all on fixed incomes.
Here is the article:
Many travelers first got their start by exploring the world
through
their favorite books. If you have a beloved author or story,
one
exciting way to bring those words to life is by visiting the
places
that inspired those tales.
To all our journeys, in and out of books!
From ancient history to pop culture, there's nothing like a
book-inspired adventure!
You know what it was like to stay up late into the night, nose
glued
to the pages as your favorite characters tromped through
jungles,
hiked mountains, fell under magic spells, or battled mythic
creatures.
How would it feel to walk in their footsteps?
Here are just some of thousands of possible adventures that will
make
your favorite books really come to life.
For the lover of classics - Shakespeare's fingerprints can be
found
all over Europe. From the balconies of Verona to the Forum in
Rome to
the Globe Theater in London to Hamlet's Kronborg Castle in
Helsingrr,
Denmark, his timeless tales will come to life in new ways as you
explore the places that inspired him. You can spend an entire
trip
just in England - the center of his life and work - or take a
month
and visit the locations featured in your most beloved plays.
Tolstoy's St. Petersburg, Russia, blooms with moody mystery,
and James
Joyce's Dublin, Ireland, is filled with quirky places, most of
them
still standing, that the hero Leopold Bloom wanders in Ulysses,
making
it perfect for a walking tour. The world of Isabelle Allende's
The
House of the Spirits creates a Santiago, Chile, that is woven
with
rich imagination and the movements of history.
For the kid in you (or in your life) - Madeline walked the
charming
streets of Paris. Anne of Green Gables created mischief and
fell in
love on Prince Edward Island, Canada (you can catch an Anne and
Gilbert festival in July).
Winnie the Pooh's Hundred Acre Woods - and trails leading to all
the
places mentioned in the book - lie peacefully in a place called
Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, England.
The places I mentioned about Earnest Hemingway and Miguel de
Cervantes
about Spain.
Or you have children of all ages that would like to find
Neverland and
Peter Pan by JM Barrie or Cinderella's Castle, or even the
Pirates of
the Caribbean on the islands themselves.
There is so much more to travel, then just traveling.
You never know it may not be that hard to get to the places you
want
to visit.
