Hello everyone,

The NFB of Texas board met recently to discuss how we might assist members who need financial help to attend the 2015 convention of the National Federation of the Blind, to be held in Orlando, from July 5-11. This year, the board has determined that it will offer assistance to 20 members by paying the cost of a room for those who are selected. Anyone who receives assistance will have a roommate. 

Those who wish to be considered for assistance should complete the 2015 Convention Assistance Request Form, and submit it to their chapter or division president by the deadline. A copy of that form is attached here. Please let me know if you have difficulty opening it for some reason. The board is asking all chapter and division presidents to have their recommendation(s) in to my office no later than April 30. Your president may set a deadline for submission that is earlier than that in order to allow him or her time to go over the submissions and make a recommendation to me. Please adhere to the deadline set by your local chapter or division president. 

If you already have a room reserved for the convention, don't cancel it. Just let your chapter or division president know. If you are selected, we will try to find a way to use your room as a part of the NFB of Texas block so that you don't lose any part of your deposit. If you don't have a room reservation, we will make one for you once you are selected.

The board would like to place an emphasis on assisting the following groups; blind students (all ages), first time convention attendees, and those who have a significant financial need. If you can afford to pay for your trip to the convention, I want to urge you not to apply so that we can use the money for those who really need the help. If you really can't afford to go without some help, please don't be shy about applying. 

I am asking each chapter and division president to share this information with their entire membership because some members may not have access to email. It is your responsibility, as leaders, to insure that every member knows this assistance is available. Please print copies of the form so that you can distribute them to chapter members who can't access the application in electronic format.

Some chapters may also offer assistance, and I urge those chapters to let me know that they plan to do that so we can work together to make sure we help as many people as possible.
