Phyliss,
I hope someone from Virginia will contact you as they had a large number of
roadside closings this year due to budget cuts. I do not know if any blind
vendors were impacted or not, but I would assume so. Facilities are free to
be closed by their host agencies and there is no guarantee for any blind
vendor about any facility that I know of.
Here, the Texas Department of Transportation makes those decisions whether
on interstates or for the few on state highways. There has been at least
one permanent closure in the past year or so. The only recourse was back
through our state SLA for possible reassignment to another facility.
I would recommend that you contact your district's STATE
representative/senator's offices as the decisions in GA are likely state
decisions, not federal. I assume you have already contacted your SLA and
asked about options?
Hope someone else can give you more worthwhile advice.
Good luck!

Subject: [vendtalk] Help me find help
Dear fellow Vendors,
I am writing this letter with the hope that some one out in Vendor-land can
help me. I am a blind vendor in Georgia two rest areas locations; I-85
North Carnseville and I-85 North, Swanee Ga. I was informed yesterday by
the SLA that the GADOT has slated both of my only rest areas for closure
this month 7/2009. Out of all the the other rest stops, only mine appears
to be on the chipping block. I have sent a e-mail to my Congressional Rep.
Phil Gingry, but I would like input for other vendors in other states who
have faced this same issue. Who else can I contact both locally and
nationally to appeal this decision?{I am the only minority women vendor with
a roadside in GA.}FYI. Also, has anyone else gotten notice that their
roadsides were closing this year? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely yours,
Phyliss Davis
