QuietCars -- Discussion of new quiet cars and pedestrian safety

About QuietCars
English (USA)

This listserv has been created in response to concerns among pedestrians, in particular pedestrians who are blind, about the growing trend for automobile
manufacturers to design extremely quiet vehicles.  These cars pose a hazard to pedestrians and cyclists, who need to be aware of approaching vehicles that
are out of their line of sight.  Children and seniors are likely to be most vulnerable.  Quiet vehicles are highly problematic for blind pedestrians, who
rely on the sounds emitted by cars in order to travel safely and independently.
We all benefit from a less noisy environment, and we support the efforts of the automotive industry to reduce noise pollution.  We also applaud the development
of vehicles that are less dependent on fossil fuel and thus more environmentally friendly.  However, we believe that the auto industry must take measures
to insure the safety of blind and sighted pedestrians.
This listserv is a forum for persons who are interested in the issue of quiet cars and pedestrian safety.  It is a place where we can share information
and exchange ideas.  We welcome participation by anyone inside or outside the blind community.  By working together, concerned citizens can address the
problems posed by quiet vehicles and move toward viable solutions.
