[Artists-making-art] marketing art

So nice to meet you!

I started a blog after my sight loss. As a visual artist, I had to fighure out how to move forward. I decided that I would write a blog and address sight loss issues for visually impaired people like me, and to enlighten other people who know nothing about sight loss. It was therapeudic for me to do this and helped me to deal with my own situation. It has helped me to verbalize what I was experiencing. It also helped me to find resources and learn more about sight loss. It was a whole new world for me. It is a very interesting world, really.

Here is my blog:
http://www.walkingbyinnervision.blogspot.com

I have a website - it is for information only, not a selling site.
I know next to noghting about developing a website, but I put this one together with a program template. I wanted a site to show some of the work I do. So many people always ask me if I have a website, so I wanted to share my work and my ehibition schedule on it.

You have a fantastic background - mine is academic and museum/gallery centered. Before my teaching career, I was the director of the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts in Pennsylvania. Most of my career has been promoting artists, displaying art in exchibitions, and making and exhibiting m own art.

I am retired now, and it is so wonderful to be able to make art whenever I want to - any day at all. I love being retired!

Lynda

Thanks so much! I'm sure it will go well. It's a minor procedure, but HPS (the type of albinism that causes my vision problems, as well as all sorts of other party "gifts") affects blood clotting so it's been crazy getting everything planned in case something goes wrong.

I used to actually work in the trade show business. I was an editor of an international magazine for people who plan large trade shows. In 2008, however, my health problems were becoming more frequent and time consuming, so I had to quit working. Now, I work part-time, and volunteer full time, for the HPS Network. It's so great to have found something that is flexible and can work around my medical issues. The show in Miami is for GI docs. HPS causes Crohn's disease, as well as vision and bleeding problems (and other stuff.)

I am on the Krafters-Korner division, and a new person there just introduced herself -s he is a knitter and says she has an Etsy store. lol

Here is her Etsy information. I have not yet checked it out but will do that in a few minutes. She also has a blog.

MY GOSH, are you busy. I used to be like that. I just lost my sight 4 years ago and it has taken me this long to be back up and running again!!! I was a painter/printmaker and college professor. I am now making pottery and doing encrusted beadworking. Just this year, I am BACK to the exhibition BUSINESS - or as I like to call it "The Show business."

Hey, next year, lets make it a goal to be up and running with Etsy, too! I think it would be nice to do. Until then, I will probably be promoting lots of others and helping them by including them in the TREASURIES I am curating there. I hae THREE there at the moment. I just learned how to do it, so I am having fun with it for now and hope that maybe it will help others get some attention and sales.

I hope your surgery goes VERY well. Lynda (River Woman)

Let me know when you're ready and I'll test things out with you. I'm also not ready just now. I'm traveling and won't be home until Jan. 5th. Then, I think I have a trade show in Miami the third week of Jan. I'm organizing a national conference for HPS in March - busy, busy.....I'm having a minor surgery on Dec. 15, but because of my bleeding disorder, it's like planning the invasion of Normandy! So, I'm not going to be ready to tackle it for a bit either.

I do have a number of artist's friends who sell on Etsy, as well as my daughter who sells her handmade cards and some bead work there. I think we could figure it out and I don't think it is that hard to do. I will ask them for some tips. I would like to try selling there next year, right now, just too busy with the holidays coming up. And, I promised to teach 3 class es for the NFB Krafters-Korner folks - pottery projects- so I am not going to think about putting anything up on Etsy before February.

I am also thinking it would be good to start then as business is probably not so good. It would give me time to really learn the process without pressure - and by the time the holidays come around a year from now, I would be prepared and have a store full of things for sale.

I haven't played around too much with the social networking aspects of Etsy - we should set that up. There must be a way.....

I am on Etsy - I have never listed anything for sale, but I have just put together Treasuries in the past couple of weeks, and I figured out how to begin networking with others and have a circle started. Right now, I am putting other people's things up on my facebook page to help them get noticed in my own facebook community. I enjoy helping other artists. I suppose in the future I will probably be putting my own work up for sale, but not for awhile.

I sell my work at some high end Christmas markets in November - they are juried and by invitation and get a good buying audience - I do three of them. And, I have exhibitions of my work in museums and galleries and sell it that way. I did a solo exhibition at a museum in Sept/October and it was the highest visitors and sales the museum has had in the past 25 years, I was told by the director. So, for now, it s working for me the way I do it but I think Etsy might be a nice thing to do too.

I have a husband who helps me to the shows I do, and some family members who help me. Otherwise, I could never be out there doing them by myself. I think Etsy would be really good for those who cannot get around to do regional shows because they require a ton of work and time to pull them all together.

I've bought from Etsy many times, and it has a pretty good representation of artists with disabilities and art and crafts which integrate braille, including jewelry, pictures, and baby blankets. It is possible to build social circles on Etsy, and I've often wished that there was a blind artists community on it, but I'm not sure about all the ways to connect and create communities on the very extensive site.

                                Hi Heather and Kendra,

There is an on-line marketplace that a number of my friends have tried and some are even selling from it. It is more craft based than art but it seems to have a pretty broad interpretation of craft. It is Esty and their site is:

                                http://www.etsy.com/

An article in the LA Times talks about it at:

                                http://articles.latimes.com/2011/jan/01/business/la-fi-etsy-20110101

I will ask around about an on-line marketplace for artwork.

Thanks Kendra. I've had some limited luck just posting photos of the work on Facebook. I also set up an Etzy site. It hasn't been hugely profitable, but I also haven't given it the attention and promotion it needs, so I can't really whine. It is cheap!

I thought about splitting a table at a fair with a friend. I need to get more work in stock though, which with life right now, probably won't be realistic until the spring.

Thanks for the ideas - keep them coming!

Hi Heather, try out the internet. I heard places like Ebay are a good market. State and local fairs are another great way to either show off your work or sell it down the road. Art festables are a great place to show off your work so that you can get a sense of how it will do in the market. They are just some ideas that I got since I worked in the Oregon State Fair and heard about the internet and got a rag rug displayed in a place that normally shows off art instead of crafts this year. I hope that they are a help to you!

I'm also very interested in hearing about how others market or sell their work. Part of my trouble is I never have much in stock at any given time. But, should I manage to build up something, I'd love to find a way to do something constructive with it. I have hung some of my work at local coffee shops, but it never really sells. I thought maybe it was me, but when I spoke to others who have used the same venues, it seems like they also haven't had much luck. At least the artwork isn't just sitting under my bed though! Grin!

                                Hi fellow Artists,
My name is Jeannie, I am a totally blind artist who is trying to find new ways of creating my art. I love working in clay and did love to paint until a year and a half ago when I had to have my eyes removed. Still healing and wanting to find new and exciting ways to share ideas and be able to talk with other artists.
I just turn 50, I have been married 30 years, have 2 kids and 3 grand kids who I call my grandflowers, because their names are Lily, Violet and Magnolia. I am from Lacrosse WI.
                                Nice to meet you all.
                                Sincerely
                                Jeannie Nylander
