[blindkid] Washington DC for 9yo

Hi, Tene,

If you have time for some sightseeing, here are a few attractions which I
have found to be blind-friendly:

The FDR Monument - Has four rooms with raised and reachable panels in relief
showing scenes from his life. There are also a couple of statues, including
one of the president in his wheelchair. There is some sort of panel in
Braille which, unaccountably, is about nine feet above the ground!

The Vietnam Wall - The Wall is very much a hands-on experience. You
experience a descent that takes you deeper into the structure, and then a
rise back out to the world again; the names of the dead are carved and can
be read tactually.

The Vietnam Women's Memorial - This statue of three figures is located not
far from the Wall, and is easy to reach and explore.

The Spy Museum - This newly--opened museum has made some accommodations to
be accessible to blind visitors; I haven't been there so I don't know how
well they've succeeded.

The Capitol, Statuary Hall - The hall contains statues of famous men and
women donated by each of the states.

Washington Monument - At every level in the stairwell are sculpted panels
donated by the states or various organizations. (If you don't want to climb
to the top you can take the elevator up and walk down to look at the
sculptures.)

The Naturalists' Center - Originally this little-known gem was in the
basement of the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History. Regretably it has
moved out to the suburbs, but not far from the capital. It is a vast
collection of specimens of insects, birds, mammals, fossils, and minerals,
and the public is welcome to come in and explore. They'll pull out whatever
you're interested in and let you examine it.

Have a great trip!

Debbie

Subject: [blindkid] Washington DC for 9yo

Hello All,

Need tips on how to make DC (during inauguration) a pleasant trip for Na'im
( 9yo with ONA/light perception only). We will be doing tours, parade, and
hopefully sitting on the mall listening to the inauguration. Any suggestions
besides plenty of Tylenol or Motrin?

Tene
