An instrument that only takes one hand???
I am not sure on that one, but it sure limits the musician.
Maybe a harmonica.
And, how much will he be needed in band.
It is hard to memorize all of that music.
One of the tricks is to memorize the piece and put piece markers in your brain:.
The problem, sometimes, with memorizing the entire piece is that you can't disect it.
So, the conductor says:
"Let's start with measure 40."
And, your brain has to do it from the beginning.
So, there are some draw-backs and different skill sets to learn.
But, playing by ear is a great tool and Yes, many band directors and music teachers are now encouraging musicians to develop this skill.
