Hello everyone,

    These capabilities are being built in to the KNFB Reader. We've always 
said that the various technologies we develop to enhance independence and 
opportunities for the blind will find their way in to such technological 
developments as the interface to enable a blind person to drive a car 
independently. The KNFB reader can all ready detect colors and has been used

to read street signs so the technology is all ready there. Plans are also in

the works to have blind individuals drive a car from the NFB Jernigan 
Institute to the 2011 NFB Convention in Orlando. The technology is on a 
faster track than you may think. Even I was surprised at how far along it 
is.

The real challenge will be how to access signs and lights.  How do you tell 
a stop sign, whether a stop light is green or red, A Yield Sign, No turn on 
red etc.

This is a big step forward but unfortunately I don't see driving accessible 
for the blind within my lifetime.

At some point in the future maybe but I have to say many years off.
