That's an excellent point. As with your your sons, our daughter has
very much adjusted to having shells in all the time.

When she was younger it was frustrating to get her to let us put them
in but at this point, she mainly gets upset if they are out-- she says
it feels strange which certainly makes sense to me. Still, she has
managed to go for periods of time (maybe an hour or two) without them
in with minimal complaints when situations required it. A year or two
ago, that would not have been possible without a real meltdown.

Actually, I say "them" but it is just one that is an issue. She has a
thin one that stays in all the time. I think that side has gone over a
year before without taking the shell out. The other one is virtually
the size of her entire eye (the organic eye on that side is incredibly
small-- we could not even find it until a specialist showed it to us--
that small!) The thick one is much more easily turned the wrong
direction or bumped and knocked out, especially as we approach the
time to have the size increased or to make a new one (after several
size increases of an old one).

Here's a funny little story: Want to feel like a really terrible
parent? Accidentally bump your child with a finger the wrong way and
have her shout at you that you knocked her eye out! I'll bet not too
many parents have ever hear that one before. (Ah, the joys of
parenthood, LOL...)
