[blindkid] Spending the summer in Paris

The Children's Museum in La Villette Park is great fun. They have a lot of
braille there--in French of course. The park has a lot of great places to
run, climb and play. I think it's in the 17th or 19th Arrondissment--easy
access via Metro. We also enjoyed visiting Louis Braille's home in Coupvrey.
The tour guide gave us a special private tour when he realized our son is
blind. It's right outside Paris. It's right next to EuroDisney which we
chose to avoid. We also enjoyed floating boats in the fountain at the Jardin
du Luxembourg.

I was originally worried that it would be tough to visit Paris with young
children but we had a lovely time. Everyone treated us kindly. I think you
only get the "ugly American" treatment when you act like an ugly American.
The Parisians were particularly deferential to our blind son and we saw
several blind people on the streets. Near our hotel, the street crossings
had audible signals telling you where you were.

It's a great place to visit and my family would love to return. I hope you
enjoy your time there.

Subject: [blindkid] Spending the summer in Paris

Hi all-

I have just gotten a 6 week job in Paris for the summer and am looking into
any
and all contacts for my 5 1/2 yr old daughter, Zelda, who was born blind due
to
congenital toxoplasmosis. She has a twin brother, Creed, who is not blind.
Both
have attended a French immersion Montessori school for 3 years and Z also
has
been doing Braille and O&M for a few years now - Kindergarten in the fall.

Anyway - I am looking for any leads on Braille teachers or activities for
Zelda
in Paris. Please pipe in with any connections! I am bi-lingual and the kids
are
working on it:)

Merci,
Gail
