Andrea could you contact me offsite @ jjordan_pa at yahoo? I would love to hear more about the technology you have in place for your son.

As a blind person and as a parent of a blind child (6) we have encouraged
all the technology he can get. He goes to the school for the blind in the
mornings to learn Braille, Nemeth, and technology. He has an hour lesson
everyday using a screen reader, a computer, IPod Touch, and a Refresha
Braille.
He will be using this technology in his regular elementary school as soon as
he is very comfortable with the technology, that will be later this month.
He has been working very hard for months now. He can send emails and check
his own, he types 67 characters a minute (he's only first grade so we can't
count words yet because his spelling is at a first grade level).
The I-devices as we call them, have a lot of advantages. You can hook up a
Braille display and read a book or do email, or text, or whatever you want
to. If you don't want the display you can do all these things without the
display.. You can read a book audibly, check email, surf the web, whatever.
The other thing that the I-devices give you (as long as they have a camera)
is the ability to scan bar codes, check colors, identify your money, read
printed material (just like the KNFB Reader but without the large cost).
If it is something you are wanting to just try and not put to much money
into someone just told us yesterday that on the Apple site they are selling
3G IPhones for $50 bucks. You can use this without the phone service you
will just have to hook it up to a computer if you want to use the internet
on it. I do believe that this is a very good way to go with your son.
Good luck and I hope this helps,
Andrea Beasley

Hello all,

My son is turning 12, and wants an iPod Touch or a cell phone for his
birthday. We are probably not going to go there for another year or two,
but just in case we turn soft, does anyone have any advice about
easiest/most accessible brands or type of phones and/or any experience with
blind kids and iPods?

thanks!

Lynda Zwinger

The EnV2 and EnV3 phones have been a Godsend for our daughter Lauren
(16).All menus are accessible and the ability to text her messages when we
are away is very helpful (like when she's still asleep and we leave).

I understand that the newer iPhones are also very good.

My son has an iPhone and has used an iPod touch (I'm now the proud owner of
his iPod touch!). He absolutely loves them. He preferred the iPod touch to

the Nano--which also has talking menus--because it can do so much more. He
was actually able to send text messages with the touch (there's an app for
that). I'd highly recommend the off the shelf accessible devices over
devices that have to have special software downloaded to them. I don't have

a lot of experience with this but I did hear that when the new Windows
phones came out, they were not compatible with the voice software and it was

somewhat of a mess for those users. I know there are more off the shelf
accessible devices all the time but Apple products have worked well for my
son.

We bought our daughter a Apple Itouch and it's amazing what it can do.? It
has a
screen reader built into it. It screen reads everything and makes it easy to

access links on the internet.? I got this as a precursor to the cell phone,
which was 50% more and wanted to test her ability with the ITouch first,
because
the cell phone requires that you purchase internet access too.? The Ipod
Itouch
has wifi.? My daughter is a senior and I won't let her bring it to school
though.? My feeling is the younger you start them using technology the
better
are the chances they'll want more of it, and for a blind person, that is
everything!

Our son got his first cell phone when he was 11 as he was going to be on his
own
each day after school.?He has had 2 LG Verizon flip phones that?talk, the
current one?reads text messages, a feature that he wanted [at 14 texting has

become important to him socially].?He?has found these phones suitable to his

needs and we have found that they do not break the bank.?When his phone
broke
last summer I went to the Verizon web site and read up on the available
phones
to make sure we bought one that could be set to talk. These phones do
not?require any specific plan or internet access in order for the voice
feature
to work. If you decide to look into a Verizon phone with speech just be sure
you
have the information about the phone and the talking feature with you go to
the
Verizon store. We have bought phones from Verizon at 4 different stores and
no
one at any of the stores were aware that the phone could be set to talk,
they
all thought I was referring to the voice command feature. He also has an
iPod
Nano which has a very good voice over feature and is less expensive than an
iTouch. The iPod shuffle also has voice over but it is not as detailed as
the
Nano and has less storage space. The Braille Press has a book available in
Braille and CD on how to use the accessible ?iPod and iTunes, Jason read
this to
set up his iTunes and to buy his music.

I hope this is ok to post as I posted the descriptions about a month ago,
but I know so many of us on the list are on an extreme budget so thought
this extra savings may really help someone.

Hi, Do to the weather all over the country Discovery toys is holding an
extra sale on top of a sale! Today only through midnight you can receive 15%
off of any winter sale item.

This includes favorites many of you have asked for like Bright Builders and
the Finger plays and fun CD. Many of these toys will return to full price
March 1, but most are being retired to make room for new wonderful products.
If you would like me to describe something just call or email.

You can shop by going to my website at www.playtoachieve.com, or by calling
me at (512) 689-5045.

I got to sit next to the CEO of Discovery Toys at our meeting a few weeks
ago. He is dedicated to accessibility and has promised me when we get our
new program this spring that he will launch it ready for us to use. For now
most everything is accessible including ordering and signing up to be a
consultant, and anything we have trouble with they are always super to help
us with.

If you have previously viewed my website and choose to order would you
please do me 1 of 2 things. Either clear your cookies before ordering, or
email me to let me know you ordered can I can make sure I get credit. The
problem appears to be fixed, but they said I could have it if someone has
looked at my site back when there was a problem.

Finally just a friendly reminder if you have been thinking about the
business opportunity you can join with a mini kit for just $75 this month
only with a 50% deposit.
