[blindkid] Jaws training

Don't look to the school to help you without threatening them.  We live in CT and not even the services for the blind were helpful without prodding.  Finally after pushing my school district paid for Jaws and technology training in general and it made a huge difference for my daughter, age 22.   In fact, in CT, Oak Hill offers technology training, but the State blind services will not utilize them unless forced due to funding.  Keep searching and PUSH PUSH PUSH!

Tracy, there are several people who provide technology instruction
tvirtually.  Dr. Denise Robinson is excellent.  I also provide this
training that is geared for the needs of each student.  All blind and
vi students can create all assignments sighted students are required
to provide, including putting pictures in Powerpoint presentations and
other documents.  They can learn to do it very quickly and confidently
too. Our blind students should be expected to provide the same high
quality documents their peers are assigned.  I worked with a fifth
grade student who had to give a Powerpoint presentation, with
pictures.  I worked with him and his presentation was the best in his
class.  The other kids did not receive one-on-one training like he did
and that made a big difference.

School districts are willing to include this as part of the IEP and
pay for the virtual instruction since the district does not pay for
travel time.
