[blindkid] Excel-labeling everything in a graph with talking software

Traci,

One point I would like to raise is that one has to be conscious of what the other students are being expected to do. For example, if there is emphasis on students understanding the mechanics of solving a problem and they are expected to do the work by hand, the Perkins is probably going to be the best tool to be using and there is nothing wrong with that. If other students are being expected to understand how to solve problems but they can use calculators and such, then looking into other tools makes a lot of sense. One of the challenges that we face now is that there is a lot of technology that can help us, but things are constantly changing. Both the BrailleNote Touch and I believe the HIMS Polaris notetakers support some ability to do math and generate presentable print copies. There are tools that allow math equasions to be typed in a notation that can then be imported into Microsoft Word's equasion editor from which it can be printed. Some of these tools are designed to allow better display of math and are not tools for calculation, though. Unfortunately, much depends upon how her classmates are working, what is commonly used in her school, how she gets textbooks, and what is available to her. The American Printing House has a graphing calculator that is accessible which is actual hardware, and View Plus has a software graphing calculator. Certainly many of us use excel for a lot of different things including doing math.

We have a list on NFBNET called BlindMath which has a lot of very knowledgeable members. I think there is some good information on www.blindscience.org as well which has some indexing of BlindMath messages. However, no matter where you look, it is important to be sure you have the most recent information because things change quickly. Certainly Denise also has a lot of good information as well.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Denise,

I'm curious if you see Excel or MathML as the most effective way for a blind student to progress through her math studies. My daughter is in 7th and still on the perkins brailler, which has its merits, but I'm wondering how you decide which path to take..

Thank you!
