Hi,
I am getting my BA in Linguistics. I don't know anyone other than my
professors and the grad students in the field who love it. I thought it
would be enjoyable and it has been, but not that much... My favorite course
I took was Psychology of Language. I thought about being a SLP because I
figured it would be more specific and more hands-on. I am an active learner
and so far I haven't found anything that truly is activity related. I have
taken 3 Speech & Hearing Sciences courses thus far for te grad program, but
I've gotten C's in all of them... At least I think I will be getting a C in
the one I am taking now... I love helping people and I want a career doing
exactly that. I would love to give to those who have nothing from homes to
helping them rebuild their lives after traumatic/tragic situations. I am a
people oriented person and love to be around people. I love working in an
office setting, but at the same time I love to travel. What kind of career
combines all of these? I took the Strong Interest Inventory and Myer's
Briggs tests and I couldn't fully understand the results and the person who
went over them with me didn't really help. I asked someone at the career
counseling office at my University to help me with my resume, and I got
nowhere with that either... I don't know where else to turn... I don't want
to follow the crowd. Hence why I chose fields that aren't (typical" for
blind people to get into... At least that I know of... I know of one
Linguist and he is an awesome person! I have learned that Linguistics... is
full of research... I am not one for research... I like learning new things,
but I like to learn via experience, not reading a bunch of jargon-filled
articles and books... Anyway, I am rambling, but I hope this helps explain
everything I can...
Thank you for your help.
Tara

Tara,
What is your degree and area of study in after you graduate?
Thanks,
Steve

Hello all,

I have posted to this list previously requesting Speech-Language
Pathologists, and now I post requesting ideas for other career options. I am
now considering the fields of Social work, and TVI. I know to be a TVI I
need a background in education which would require me to get a Masters in
Special Education. Are there other ideas out there? I am young, confused and
unsure of exactly what I want to do now that I am a month from graduation. I
need help and I am reaching out to my fellow blind citizens for help. Please
let me know of any information I can check out. I will keep looking at the
AFB Career connect as well as look into the different programs around my
state.

I appreciate anyone's assistance and information.

Sincerely,

Tara
