Subject: Today’s Interns Determine Tomorrow’s Outcomes

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is a CONVENER, CONNECTOR, and CATALYST for change, increasing the political and economic power of people with disabilities.

In 2002, AAPD set out to develop the next generation of leaders with disabilities by founding the AAPD Summer Internship Program, a program I’m immensely proud to be associated with as a graduate and now as a Member of the AAPD Board of Directors.

While the disability community has made substantial progress since the founding of the program 15 years ago, students with disabilities continue to face physical, economic, and attitudinal barriers in accessing internships, despite the fact that these students are just as qualified, if not more qualified, than their non-disabled peers. As you know, internships are a critical experience to prepare students to secure meaningful employment upon graduation.

It’s why the program and its’ growth are so important – and it’s why I’m writing you today to ask for your support, something I feel uniquely positioned to do. As a Board Member at AAPD, I can tell you the program has significantly expanded over the last 2 years, an achievement our leadership is particularly proud of. Moreover, as a 2011 graduate of the internship program, I can share with you the impact it has had on the trajectory of my career.

As an AAPD Summer Intern, you are linked to a mentor and internship cohort that builds community and fosters a strong sense of disability pride. The internship placement itself, as well as the additional meetings and training sessions, provide professional skills and assets that stay with you throughout the course of your career. My internship through the program with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi helped me gain the confidence to identify as a person with a disability in the workplace and to pursue my career goals – confidence I hope to inspire in the next generation of students.

Just as AAPD invested in me, I now invest in the interns of today that will lead the fights of tomorrow to be a convener, connector and catalyst for political change and economic opportunity. <https://aapd.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08dab5cd58ad9250c3f56519f&id=ea4189b416&e=4895b94957> I hope you will join me by making an end of year tax-deductible contribution to support AAPD’s Summer Internship Program. Whether it’s $10, $25, $100, $250 or $500, or whatever amount you can give, your contribution matters.

Thanks so much for your consideration!

In solidarity,

Member, AAPD Board of Directors
