Hi Marilyn, Arizona has laws to protect our service dogs. The Police and
Animal Control and the court system choose not to enforce them. I managed
to get to court on one of the attacks on Lily,my first guide. I had vet
bills to prove that Lily had been injured, but the judge threw the case out
of court. All 3 of my guide dogs have been attacked multiple times and
every time, nothing has been done. Early on in Shaman's training,he had been
attacked and he became aggressive towards other dogs. He would growl if
there was another dog near him.It took me several months of working with
him and I ended up having to use a shock collar on him. I hate using a
shock collar, and regard this as a tool of last resort. I had to zap Shaman
every time he growled at another dog. This is the only thing that worked.I
have not had to use it since.I do fear that Shaman will again become
aggressive towards other dogs or worse, become so afraid of other dogs that
I will end up having to retire him.It took over a year to find the right
dog to train after retiring Nala,so I really do not want to go through all
that again.Shaman is an excellent guide and his traffic work is great. He
has saved my butt many times. I love Shaman and I don't want to loose him
as my guide.I have written to my Representatives,I have gone to the City
Council, the Board of Supervisors, and even the Mayor's office. I have been
totally ignored. I just don't know what else to do.Others have complained
about their dogs also being attacked with no response. They no longer
complain.I have continued to complain and no one takes my complaints
seriously.I am told I have a bad attitude because I complain.I would love
to sue the city and hit them in the pocketbook where it would really hurt.
Wake these idiots up and make them enforce the laws, but I can't afford a
lawyer even if I could find one that would even take the case.I am so
frustrated over this.I am to the point that I worry every time Shaman and I
go out that he will get attacked again. Mardi and Shaman and
Tipton,future GDIT.
