[nagdu] Tie down

All my dogs before Krokus used tie-downs, and I prefer them. They don't
take up as much space as a crate, and, if it's by my bed, I can reach down
and pat the dog whenever.
A tie-down is a cable with a swivel snap on each end. It bends a bit, but
not a lot.
I don't have a hook in the wall for mine. I take a sturdy string, tie it in
a big circle, then put it around something sturdy, like a bed leg, looping
the circle through itself so that one loop sticks out an inch or so, then
put one end of the tie-down through that loop. Hope that makes sense; it's
easier to do than explain.
I wouldn't do it at first with a leash, unless you're positive your dog
won't chew through the leash. He could also get tangled easier in a leash.
Dogs take a little time to get used to tie-down, so I'd practice some before
relying on it. But, as one instructor said in an old class, once they get
used to it, you could tie them to a tissue and they'd act just the same as
when you use something sturdier.
Watch the dog at first; he might get tangled in the tie-down, so don't use
something too long.
HTH.

Subject: [nagdu] Tie down

Hey everybody,

I've read about tie downs several times on this list now. And I would like
to ask how this works practically.
My school gave me a crate for Taylor that I only used during the first few
weeks. But there are situations in which I could imagine a tie down would be
very helpful for both me and the dog. And we're planning on going on holiday
later this year for the first time with Taylor. I think that also during our
stay the possibility to use a tie down would be good.
So could anyone tell me:

- if you need a special leash for it or if it's possible with ordinary,
relatively short leashes?
- how it exactly works
- what's your opinion on this method? Do you use it?

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this. :)

Thanks,
Lisa
