Hi Lauren,

I'm so glad you are interested in teaching environmental sciences. I'm Newton, and I am currently getting my PHD in environmental science and engineering and have worked with NASA on environmental satellites, so it definitely is possible to do environmental science as someone without sight. I also lost my vision in high school, so I can relate to the uncertainty and apprehension you feel about your future career prospects, especially in the sciences.

To alleviate these feelings, we started a STEM mentorship program. We do monthly meetups and coffee hours, match you with a mentor who is a good fit for your field of interest, and share our own journeys through classes and careers. We also are working on an instructional website that provides students with information on how to complete and set up scientific lab protocols and learn scientific skills from the blind/visually impaired perspective.

To apply, please fill out this survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd0p63m3xhR_hX-r3lwEylLtFuipX3_TVOIRRH4fsTcYnUhyA/viewform?usp=sf_link

If you have any further questions or just want to talk on the phone, please contact me via email <newt.n94 at gmail.com>. YOu've already taken the first step by reaching out and asking for support, which is great. Keep it up!

Best,

Newton

After going blind last year I wasn't really sure what my opportunities in the field of science would be. I would appreciate any insights/advice on taking science classes at the collegiate level and completing the lab portions successfully.
