[nfb-talk] An idea, to discuss, at 2012 convention

I would be glad to put together a meeting of parents with custody and
visitation issues. Perhaps it would be appropriate at the Parents division
or since it is specific and will take some time, we may want to schedule a
special meeting.
In the mean time, I'll check and see if we could perhaps start an nfb
listserv on the subject in order to share Legislation and tactics.

Michael, we have passed a resolution in Tennessee regarding this issue
and have a few cases to document the problem. We do not have an
attorney in our affiliate, and are having difficulty identifying
exactly which laws need to be amended. We have also connected with
other groups of people with disabilities. can you provide suggestions
for next steps? I am thinking we need to identify exact language that
needs to be changed, but I and others are new to this process and need
specific guidance. this is personal for me and at least two others in
my chapter and others in the affiliate, so we really want to see the
law strengthened.

Lester, I imagine this is happening in Arkansas as well. some do not
know of the NFB; some do not fight; some are too scared of losing what
little they get and don't speak up; but if you look you will probably
find those who have faced or are facing this issue. I hear of at
least a case a year in Tennessee. In the past three years, I gave a
lot of visitation to a drug attic because I was afraid to fight; found
the NFB and have become more assertive; and still been investigated by
childrens' services and the police due to allegations by my
ex-husband. Of course, there have been no findings, but the
investigations are obnoxious. I should not be investigated, nor
should anyone else, just because I am blind and others cannot invision
how I might parent. I regret every week that I did not fight for my
rights and the best interests of my son. He is the one who suffers by
having to visit a parent, who although loves him, belittles him and
tells him that his mom is bad because she can't see.

Hopeful for equalization,
Lucy
