[nfb-talk] Stupidity running amuck on the Colbert Report!

I can’t believe you’re bringing the cane vs. dog thing into this…wait, yes I can.

It would help, however, if you actually knew what you were talking about, which, clearly, you do not.

Suffice to say, in the getting from here to there department, I’m still ultimately in charge, I still plan the routes, I still have to figure out how to get around obstacles that my dog is unsure of, I still have to find the alternate routes, determine where we are, and where that is in relation to where we’re going. It’s true the clues and landmarks we use are different for guide dog users, bu that doesn’t mean we don’t use them. Nor does it mean we just “pick up the handle and go”.

Except that I, and other guide dog users, have said this over and over again, and certain people refuse to be educated, preferring instead to stick to some thing you supposedly learned somewhere. You cn’t educate the unwilling. Ignorance is fixable, stupidity is not. And all the rest.

FWIW, I am both an excellent cane traveler and an excellent guide dog user. And I don’t really care how that sounds, if you want to know the truth about it. I choose to work with a guide dog, and by no means has it made me less independent. I, at least, have the ability to do my own thinking.
