I think you are here! We believe that blind folks can do anything they want
to with the proper training! I have a psychology degree but now work.
However, i'm not idle. i volunteer with our local NFB chapter in Ann Arbor
and am treasurer and sometimes secretary. Most of our chapter though small
have college degrees. Some in computer technology, social work, music and I
think one in political science. At the moment 3 of our four officers are
blind. We have had different types of fund raisers. Some worked and some,
not so much. But, WE!! put them on and were and will continue to be in
charge of them! One of our most seccessful ones was when we cooked a meal at
the Moose lodge. The cook and expediter was blind. The folks passing out the
information were also blind. And, folks would have never guessed that the
cook was blind. They ate and enjoyed there food. In fact, most folks didn't
know this until the cook finished up and came out for the last part of the
benefit. And, our chapter only has half a dozen core members with a few
fringe ones! When we aren't busy looking for jobs at least myself am
involved in other things as well. For example, I am involved in our local
Knights of Columbus council as well as part of our district one. I even got
elected to an office recently. Also, I volunteer withour city's disabilities
commission. Lastly, I volunteer as a parent representive on a board that
accepts and helps families keep there children in the home as opposed too
being put into residential care. Other members of our chapter do various
things in there curches, communities and wit5h there families. Sorry guys
who have heard this or think I'm blowing my own horn or that of the Ann
Arbor chapter. My point is that I am only one person in a small chapter and
our chapter is only one small chapter in the state. The state is part of a
national group! And if our little chapter can do what it does, imagine how
much more we do on a national level! No, if I could only get my gide dog
committee of the ground, I would deffinetely feel a sense of accomplishment!

Subject: [nfb-talk] Am I on the right list?

  Hi guys
Since I heard of the NFB in the 90s while living in the US, I've always
been struck by your way of seeing blindness, which is kind of my
parents' and my philosofy; I returned here to university, and also in
the hopes that based on my blindness experiences (especially with a
Psychology major), and by what I've read on your philosofy, make a
difference in the way the blind live here in Mexico. My attempt of doing
this with a local blindness organization failed! To start out with, I
didn't like the idea that they have a sighted secretary and a sighted
Psychologist, and other ideas I had seem to be very revolutionary, thus
I ended being kicked out, but my dream of having some sort of NFB like
organization is still alive! So I'd like to get to meet some of you via
EMail, and get more in-depth with the NFB philosofy, especially trying
applying it to myself. I'm deafblind, so I've got limitations that the
local blindness association took as overprotective of my parents like
can't distinguish the sound from right/left etc, thus feel unsafe
walking by myself on the streets, but my wanting to do something to
change the blind of my country is very strong! dream the local blindness
association didn't want to accept; it's as the blindness association
wanted to mold me into their way of being! thus many battles I had to
fight, but well I guess maybe my time wasn't right. Thanks for advice
you could give, and hopefully I'm on the right list?
