Subject: Minutes from the Meeting of July 14, 2018

NFB Meeting
Phoenix Chapter
July, 14, 2018

The meeting was called to order at 9:52 A.m. Both the pledges were led
by Arlen Keen. Prayer requests were given and the invocation was
offered by Jordan Moon.

Roll call was then taken. There were 13 members present; 2 guests; and
two on the telephone. This brought the total to 17 participants in the
meeting. The Treasurer’s report was then read. It was motioned by
Carrie Taylor and seconded by Arlen Keen for its approval.

President Kuhn talked about a New policy of the Affiliate to have
members declare a primary chapter. This would not stop people from
being members of more than one chapter, but it would allow them to
have voting rights in their primary chapter only. He then asked each
person to declare their primary chapter. Members who declared Phoenix
as their primary Chapter are as follows:
1. Carrie Taylor
2. Emanuel Caddy
3. Marion Baker
4. Sharonda White
5. Joe Goode
6. Jordan Moon
7. Mark Hamblin
8. Arlen Keen
9. Michael Smith
10. Joy Harris
11. Monica Nunez
12. Donna Silba
13. Brad Kuhn
14. Tom Johnson
Lori kirsop declared her primary Chapter as West Valley.

In the absence of the chapter secretary, Ben Bloomgren, the June
minutes were read by Sharonda White. After a number of corrections
were made by various members, Arlen Keen moved to approve the
corrected minutes and Joe Goode seconded and the motion passed.

Old Business:
National Convention -- Both Lori and Jordan attended the National
Convention. Jordan gave a report. He stated that the attendance was a
little less than 2500; this may be due to the Convention being in
Orlando for seven years in a row.
Arizona sold sweatshirts. We ordered 500 and sold almost half. The
cost of purchasing the sweatshirts was about $8,000; We have already
made more than $6,000 back.
Arizona was again in charge of Youth Track, where they had scavenger
hunts and other fun activities for the youth. Lastly, Jordan
encouraged us to listen to the banquet speech and the Presidential
report for this year. Next year’s Convention will be in Las Vegas, NV
at the Mandalay Bay hotel.
Lanyards -- Jordan sold three lanyards and the $15 was turned in to Donna.

State Convention -- The dates are August 30 through September 2, 2018.
President Kuhn asked us to bring up the idea of adding $5 to the cost
of registration in order that every attendee would have their
important tickets placed into one of the Phoenix lanyards. Money
accumulated by this fundraiser would then be returned to the Phoenix
Chapter since this is our fundraiser. Joe Goode promised to bring this
to the Arrangements committee at their next meeting.
Jordan added that there will be a dynamic seminar included in this
year’s Friday lineup. It will include networking opportunities,
workshops, and more.
Door Prizes: President Kuhn recommended that the Chapter donate five
of our 50/50 Cold Hard Cash raffle books as door prizes. This would
definitely promote the raffle with the $1000 winner to be drawn in
December. This was approved by the Chapter with Joe Goode motioning
and Mike Smith seconding the motion.
Convention Assistance -- Last year, we were able to assist about 13
people with meals. This year, the President would like us to help with
two out of three meals for people interested. The President will post
an inquiry on the listserv for those needing meal assistance to this
year’s State Convention. Those who are active participants in the
Chapter will be considered first.

Fundraising:
Cold Hard Cash – Arlen passed out books of raffle tickets for the Cold
Hard Cash 50/50 raffle. The name of the winner will be drawn the third
Saturday in December. Tickets are being sold for $20 per book, or $5
for one ticket. President Kuhn stated that the tickets were $78.77 to
make. There were 250 books printed.
President stated that he believes that the person selling the most
tickets should get a prize as well as the person who sold the winning
ticket.
He also stated that the person who sells $400 worth of tickets should
get a book put in the drawing with their name on each ticket.

Christmas Party – We need to begin searching for potential places for
the Christmas party. Last year’s party was at Claim Jumpers and most
people felt that it was quite suitable.

New Business:
Next Meeting – President Kuhn stated that he polled the Board and a
majority felt that we should move the meeting permanently to Cocoa’s.
He further went on to say that he feels that meetings at SAAVI tend to
attract only SAAVI students, and there are more people who might come
if the meeting was not at SAAVI. Furthermore, he felt that SAAVI was
not able to accommodate the amount of people he wishes to attend each
meeting. Though some Chapter members objected to the move and not
being allowed to put forth a motion for anything different than
Coco’s, the President ruled that this was our permanent meetingplace.
If we wanted to change in six months, we could let him know.

Meet the Blind Month – The chapter is planning a day at the Zoo. This
will hopefully be a day that parents can bring their children. As of
now, the dates have not been nailed down, but the President will have
the date by our August Board Meeting. He has been in communication
with the Zoo, and they have promised to have as much in braille and
tactual graphics as possible by the date scheduled. Both October 6 and
13th are potentials.
Another activity is also being planned at Swift. The President has
spoken with Debra Smith about us having a table there during October.
We would be allowed to sell raffle tickets, lanyards, candy bars.
Monica Nunez volunteered to help out at the table for this activity.
In addition, the VA has White Cane Month in October. It was
recommended that our Chapter participate in this. Joy Harris
volunteered to help out in this activity.

Bell Academy – The Phoenix BELL program will be starting on Monday.
Jordan reminded us that this is an NFB activity, and not a SAAVI
activity. We have 13 students so far this year, with two coming from
Minneapolis, MN. The Chapter was asked to help out with lunch on
Tuesday, July 24. It was approved that the Chapter would give up to
$50 for the lunch, with Arlen motioning and Monica seconding the
motion. President Kuhn felt that all the chapters should participate
in donating on 7/24, and asked Jordan if he would solicit funds from
both East Valley and West Valley to help with the cost of the lunch.
Jordan stated that he would call the Chapter Presidents.

Philosophy – President Kuhn stated that we would be doing Philosophy
at our next month’s meeting at 11:30. It is slated to be until 12:30
p.m.

Fundraising – Arlen Keen brought up the possibility of having another
Chipotle fundraiser. 50% of the proceeds go back to the Phoenix
Chapter. President Kuhn felt this was a great idea, but suggested that
we look for a more central location, which would allow more people to
participate, which would in turn bring us more money.
Arlen also suggested that we plan a night out activity for Meet the Blind Month.

Membership Committee – They did not meet this month, due to the Chair,
Teresa Sanchez, not feeling well. It was also announced that Teresa
would be the person serving on the Affiliate Membership Committee.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:53 A.m.
