Tracy,

Maybe you know this already, but you can generate characters using the numeric pad.  In Windows 7 and I think XP, for example, if you turn NUM LOCK 
on, hold the ALT key down and enter zero, zero, nine, two you will get the backslash.  It is hard to understand the omission of that key even if people 
don't use it that much any more.  If it is a special keyboard, I wonder if there is already key mapping software with the computer, or if there may be some 
unusual key combinations that might yield something.  Both sometimes are the case with laptop keyboards and could be the case if a special keyboard is 
used..
