[nfbcs] Odd computer situation

Hi all, this is not specific to the surface go product, or for that matter it is not specific to the surfaces as a product line from Microsoft, this is a sound driver issue, I’ve seen similar behavior exhibited in the hp elitebook 850 g4 and the hp elitebook 820’s too.
Seems that it is quite common in devices possessing Realtek sound or variations therein.
And, the Realtek control center is relatively inaccessible, however; the basic functions of the device will work with only the driver present not including the control center.
I don’t think a call to the ms disability helpdesk will help a great deal in this case as it’s really not an ms issue even though some of their products are affected by it.
Good luck and hth – Ed.

Jim,

The frustration I have is that this can work differently with different computers. There is some possibility that when you plug in your headphones that a dialog is coming up asking you to choose the device you plugged in. In one case, I get a nice list of devices and "Headphones" is checked. I press OK and the audio switches to headphones. In another case, I get a somewhat inaccessible screen and I have to hunt for Headphones, but once I make the choice, the system seems to remember from then on, fortunately. It is possible, though, that focus is not being moved to the appropriate window.

In systems like these, one has to be careful when in the sounds dialogs. For example, if you have headphones plugged in and you go into the sounds dialog and you see choices for "output" devices, arrowing down to "speakers" will cause sound to be routed to your speakers even if your headphones are still plugged in. I wonder if in your case the volume control dialog is open and if touching the display is changing your output device.

As is the case with other device drivers, a Windows Update can update a driver and that driver may change how this is handled. Therefore, it is not uncommon for one's computer to change behavior. It is certainly possible that a Windows Update made this work differently. Still, there might be a reason this is happening to you.

Particularly if you can't determine what is happening, Curtis's suggestion that you contact the Disability Answer Desk is a very good suggestion because it will help them be aware of this problem and maybe contribute to its correction.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Unfortunately, I do not have an answer, but I can tell you that the Windows 10 laptop that I use at work does this. What I find works is plugging in the headphones before starting the laptop and then not unplugging them, no matter what. I know that this is not an optimum solution, but I hope that it helps until you are able to figure out a complete solution.

Thanks, Curtis.

I just find it very odd that it was working perfectly and then it suddenly went back to speaker mode. I will do as you suggested.

However, this morning, I was using it with ear buds, and all of a sudden, I was no longer hearing JAWS through my ear buds but rather it was back through the speaker. Obviously, it was more than JAWS...It was the audio that was no longer coming through the buds. I shut down and unplugged the buds, plugged them back in and turned the tablet on again, and it was the same deal where the audio was coming through the speaker as if the ear buds weren’t plugged in.
