Depending on the maintenance being performed and the overall infrastructure, this isn't always possible. If you only have the one web server, and that web server needs to go down for maintenance, then there's no web server to put up the message that the server is down for maintenance. If the maintenance doesn't require the server to go down, or you can redirect the traffic to another server, then you can and should put a message up that the server is down for maintenance.

	It would be wonderful if the NFB sites would display a message alerting visitors that site maintenance is currently taking place and to try back later.
