Los Grupos Instan el Fín de los salarios Submínimos para los Trabajadores 
Discapacitados

Baltimore, Maryland (25 de julio del 2011): Organizaciones defensoras de los 
derechos de discapacidad, The Center for
Self-Determination, Disability Rights Advocates, National Down
Syndrome Congress, National Down Syndrome Society, National Fragile X
Foundation, and TASH, se unirán a la Federación Nacional de Ciegos
en la realización de protestas de información, el martes, 26 de julio, que 
es el
21 aniversario del Acta de Discapacidad de los Americanos, Americans with 
Disabilities Act. Las
protestas de información se centrarán en educar a los miembros del público
sobre legislación pendiente que vuelve a autorizar el pago de salarios 
submínimos
a los trabajadores con discapacidad. Los grupos realizarán las
protestas en las oficinas del distrito de los miembros de la Comisión del 
Senado
de Salud, Educación, Trabajo y Pensiones, que está considerando la 
legislación.

El Doctor Marc Maurer, Presidente de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos,
dijo: "Nos sentimos muy contentos de que estas organizaciones se están 
uniendo a
nosotros para abogar por un salario igual por trabajo igual, y poner fín a
la práctica atroz de pagar salarios submínimos a los trabajadores con 
discapacidades. Ojalá que otros miembros de la comunidad de los derechos de 
los discapacitados
se unan a nosotros para hablar en contra de esta injusta
práctica discriminatoria e inmoral, oponiéndose a cualquier legislación
que lo autoriza y lo perpetúa."

Serena Lowe, directora ejecutiva de Collaboration to Promote
Self-Determination, dijo: "Nos sentimos muy contentos y orgullosos de 
unirnos a la
Federación Nacional de Ciegos para hablar en contra de la
continuación de las políticas federales que permiten la explotación de los
trabajadores con discapacidad mediante el pago de los salarios submínimos. 
Los ciudadanos con discapacidad merecen ser pagados lo mismo
que sus compañeros no discapacitados por sus contribuciones a la
fuerza laboral. Esperamos que el Congreso proporcione el liderazgo valiente
necesario para luchar por la verdadera igualdad para todos los 
estadounidenses con discapacidades".
