[Nfbf-l] WiiCane Research Blog

I am a mom of a 5-yr old VI child who has just gotten O&M instruction thru the district, after a year fight.  We put a cane in her hand last year, but she has not had steady instruction. Our daughter veers all the time. Also, presently she is only learning the diagonal technique thru school; I am teaching her the constant contact, but she is just learning it. I believe the Wii would be able to help her practice her skills so that when she picks up the cane to go outside, it will come "more naturally."

I realize the Wii  would be a teaching tool that she could use to help her, especially because it is so difficult to get our O&M to even talk to us, let alone meet with us so that we are all on the same page. I would jump at any chance to be able to help our daughter out so that when she does go outside with her cane, she is safer -- however she can get that help.

Just one mom's opinion based on lack of good O&M services!

Thank you,
I am a follower!
I think this could help keep adults safe. It is going to be a tool not a
replacement for an O&M instructor.
Lenora, I like the comparison you made during our phone conversation. A
baseball player is practice in a batting cage, but will also play on the
field. I am very exciting about this program. It is encourages kids and
adults to use their canes and have fun, why not.
Just think of the parent, blindfolded, and siblings who could learn from
this game too.
As you guys know, I teach O&M. Veering is one of the hardest things to
correct on the streets. You have to do it in a parking lot and other quiet
areas with low car travel. However, when you introduce cars into the
environment, or start crossing streets, any correction takes place after the
fact.
