Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day 2011
Join the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in recognizing EITC Awareness Day on
January 28, 2011. The EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit for
working individuals and families with low to moderate incomes. Did you know
that individuals with disabilities (25 percent of whom live below the
poverty level) continue to leave millions of dollars in EITC unclaimed each
year?

The IRS also describes seven tax deductions, income exclusions and credits
that are available for qualified taxpayers with disabilities in its
brochure, "Living and Working with Disabilities." These deductions include
Impairment-Related Work Expenses; Credit for the Elderly or Disabled;
Medical Expenses; and the Child or Dependent Care Tax Credit.

In addition, the IRS offers free tax return preparation services through its
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) for people with low to
moderate incomes and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE). To locate the
nearest VITA site, call 1-800-906-9887. For more information on TCE, call
1-800-829-1040.

You can also receive free tax preparation and filing assistance though the
Real Economic Impact Tour (REI Tour). The REI Tour provides Americans with
disabilities tools and resources to improve their lives through financial
education, training and counseling. Check the map of 2010-2011 REI Tour
Cities to find a location near you and visit the program's Events page for
other important trainings and activities.

For information on EITC and other tax credits, visit the Employment section
of Disability.gov.
