House of Representatives to Vote on Spending Resolution
The House of Representatives voted Thursday on a spending resolution that will extend current federal funding levels for six months, through 2013. The Senate is expected to vote on the resolution within the next week. By passing the resolution, Congress would be able to fund the federal government through March 2013. Obama Administration Releases Budget Report
Last Friday, the Obama Administration released a report that outlined the spending cuts that would occur if Congress fails to reach a deficit reduction deal by the end of 2012. The automatic spending reductions, or “sequestration” will reduce Medicare payments to providers by two percent, and will result in an almost 8.2 percent decrease in non-defense, non-exempt discretionary funding. Disability Leaders Release Op-Ed
Disability leaders Bob Dole and Tony Coelho released an op-ed this week that focused on individuals with disabilities, their families, friends, and caregivers and their untapped political power. Nearly 57 million Americans, or almost 19 percent of our population live with a disability. The op-ed also highlighted the upcoming National Forum on Disabilities and offered an open invitation for the Presidential candidates to attend. Read the op-ed published in Politico.
George Washington University Creates Autism Initiative
At a briefing on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, George Washington University officials announced a new initiative that will consist of scientific research and analysis on public policies that affect people on the autism spectrum. Californians Worried About Long Term Care
A new poll released this week by the SCAN Foundation and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research found that half of California voters say that they will need long term care for a close family member in the next few years, but won’t be able to afford it. The poll highlights the need for long-term services and supports throughout the country and the lack of funding that will plague caregivers and their families. Federal Government Finds Seclusion in North Carolina School District Legal
A recent investigation conducted by the U.S. Department of Education’s (DOE) office for civil rights has concluded that the New Hanover County Schools’ used of seclusion rooms to deal with aggressive behavior from students is legal. The investigation stemmed from a complaint filed by the parents of a five-year-old student in special education. Learn more about the decision from Star News Online.
Minnesota Moving Forward With Health Exchange
Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton announced this week that he seeks to gain federal approval to move forward with a Minnesota-based health exchange. To date, Minnesota has received federal grants worth $28.5 million, and has applied for another $42.5 million to build a technical infrastructure to house the exchange. Read on at the Star Tribune.
