This message is a bit dramatic, but Be My eyes is a great app and the people
are very helpful. My daughter Katie is one of the volunteers.

Newly blind:
"Now I see in my dreams"
Hi Sherri,
Victoria lives in Florida, and has a cane she calls Michael. Two years ago,
she lost her sight completely after a long battle with Optic Neuritis. At
times it has been challenging for her to learn to be independent, but Be My
Eyes helps.

Victoria vividly remembers the first time she wanted to go to the gym after
she lost her sight. Determined to challenge herself, she exited her
apartment on the 11th floor of her building and walked down the hall
touching the walls. She made her way to the elevator, found the correct
button, and felt her way into the gym. When she finally stepped onto her
usual treadmill, tears were rolling down her face. Nothing was going to stop
her.

That was a year ago, and she is still continuously challenging herself to
become more independent:

"Be My Eyes has helped me a lot, because I love sorting things, but I always
had to ask for help. Now I have done eight cabinets with Be My Eyes. You
wouldn’t believe, what I can do with Be My Eyes. It has given me so much
more independence. And the love from strangers is amazing. My experience is
that the volunteers like to receive a call, so no one should hold back,
because the volunteers are eager to help. They say that, you have more
happiness when you are making someone else happy."

There are still challenges, that Victoria has had to come to terms with in
her new state of visual impairment, but she doesn’t allow them to dampen her
spirits:

"If you are sighted you take for granted that if you run out of tomatoes,
you simply cross the street and go get them. At this moment in my life, I
cannot have that spontaneity. I have to plan who will take me to the
supermarket. That is one of the things that is very difficult. I now see at
night, because I see in my dreams. Every night I look forward to dreaming. I
see my friends and family. I see my face and I even drive. So it’s a little
shocking, when I wake up, and I open my eyes, and I don’t see. So I take
this opportunity to focus on the things, I can do," she says.
