Subject: NFBF Deaf Blind Division meeting August 13th Tuesday 7pm
Notice and Agenda
Greetings Florida NFBF Deaf Blind Division members and friends,
The past several months have been hectic. Just after our successful Boca
Raton convention, our wonderful President Alicia Betancourt suddenly
resigned. Our long-time deaf blind leader and friend Brooke Evans was
battling a serious attack on her health. Fortunately for all of us, Brooke
has been victorious in this battle, and she has significantly recovered to
continue her involvement in our DB Division as Vice President. We all
must continue to pray to give her strength and positive energy towards her
complete recovery.
Brooke and I extensively discussed the needs and future of our Florida DB
group, and we both determined that new elections are unnecessary at this
time. Regular elections can take place next Spring at our Tampa NFBF state
convention. According to our Florida NFBF and Florida Deaf Blind Division
constitutions
I am relieved to have taken the arduous Florida Bar licensing exam for which
I have been busily studying since our Mayconvention. I will now have time to
engage in the needs of our state division to arrange interesting monthly
meetings, consider new activities, and create interest to expand our active
membership.
We will be having an open meeting of our NFBF Deaf Blind Division @ 7pm
Tuesday night August 13th. The conference call in number is:
(605) 313-5111
The access code is:
305480
Our agenda will primarily be a discussion by Brooke Evans about her recent
struggle and perspective on life's blessings, and about her difficulties in
her rehabilitative facilities because of her deafness. I have attached two
recent federal legal cases concerning problems encountered in Florida
hospitals and treatment facilities by deaf persons, and the application of
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These are somewhat long, and
involve some complex legal analysis, but may be an interesting topic of
discussion at our Tuesday night meeting.
I also wish each member to consider issues and speakers to create
interesting , educational and positive interaction in each of our upcoming
monthly meetings. All suggestions will be welcomed.
I hope all of you can attend and bring your creativity and friendship.
Peace and love,
Brian Norton
Florida NFBF Deaf Blind Division Interim President
Florida NFBF Greater Daytona Beach President
