Hey Marion and NAGDU members
Great information and thank you for sharing Trisha. I recently
encountered just that type of situation when I joined the AtlantiCare Life Center in
Egg Harbor Township, NJ At this exercise facility - there has never been a
guide dog team participating in working out, using the equipment, taking
classes and walking the track. There have been a few blind people, but I
have been told they are all guided by a family member.
After attending an exercise class, I was approached by a personal
trainer/exercise instructor and informed that 3 people complained at the main desk
about me having my guide dog with me. I never noted anyone within that
class demonstrating any problems of breathing, making any types of distressful
moves - I would recognize since I was an EMT in the past.
The instructor/personal trainer that approached me said I should not be
prevented from attending classes nor should those with allergies not have the
right to attend either and experience an attack. She was fully supportive
of me and Dorito - said we should be able to travel anywhere within this
gym - even the pool area.
What was advised and cleared with the management of the facility was
between each exercise classroom was a utility closet. Dorito, my guide dog,
relaxes in that area with the door open and she lies on a 100% Egyptian Cotton
beach towel. Dorito can view me and I am very close to where she is. To
further guarantee that Dorito does not further aggravate anyone, I use
waterless shampoo in the locker room - wet her up good, brush her extensively
and use a very fine comb to get whatever loose hair or dander present. This
all done on our on personal towel and any hair off brushes or comb I place
in a baggy and bring home to dispose.
I have been doing this for over 3 months now. No one has any complaints
with Dorito and I in the locker room grooming. Walking the track, using any
cardio equipment, treadmills or bikes. And no one complains or has had an
allergy attack or complained to the front desk.
Also this was also a subject that was discussed on an open teleconference
call sponsored by the Guide Dog Foundation. It covered allergies and guide
dogs when seeking employment. If anyone wants to learn about the open
teleconference calls that GDF sponsors and are not a graduate, please do not
hesitate to contact me. The next call in July 9, 2013.
Thanks for your great information.
Always

Thanks, Tracy! I prefer to have posts from the grassroots membership
rather than from our leadership.

I don't think Trish is on the NAGDU list, so I took care of it.

Trish,
This is excellent information! Thanks for posting it here. If you haven’t
done so, yet, would you please post it to the NAGDU list? Thanks a bunch!

Subject: [Njagdu] Interesting information that may be helpful to someone.
While working with one of the Bergen county school districts we came
across this problem, so I just wanted to share some helpful information.
In a situation where one student is allergic to dogs and another uses a
service dog, the student using the service animal should be accommodated.
However, there needs to be some thought given to the student with allergies.
When they are in a class together, they should be spacially separated. Here
is just such an idea from the Department of Justice’s document, Revised ADA
Requirements; Service Animals. This is in regard to the new regulations
published in 2010.
* Allergies and fear of dogs are not valid reasons for denying
access or refusing service to people using service animals. When a person who is
allergic to dog dander and a person who uses a service animal must spend
time in the same room or facility, for example, in a school classroom or at
a homeless shelter, they both should be accommodated by assigning them, if
possible, to different locations within the room or different rooms in the
facility.
http://www.ada.gov/service_animals_2010.htm
The Job Accommodation Network has suggestions for this kind of scenario in
the workplace. Some of those ideas would not and cannot work in a school
setting, but some of them might help to improve the situation. For example,
perhaps a portable air purifier could be used in the class room and/or a
HEPA filter could be used for the ventilation system for that room. Also,
perhaps the student with the service animal could agree to use a dander
control product from the veterinarian or local pet store. The school could also
make for certain that the class room is cleaned regularly; dusted,
vacuumed, floors washed, etc. Here is the link to the JAN document.
