[Oabs] Looking forward to 2014

Hi, Kaiti,

As far as I know, the schedule below will work best. By the time I
actually get to Ohio, we will hopefully have an established time for
meetings, so anything else will certainly be able to be rescheduled or
scheduled around the meeting time.

1. Please list the times that you are available between 7:00
and 10:00 PM for each night of the week. Bear in mind that OABS only
meets once a month and that it is possible to attend the meetings
while doing other things since we meet via telephone.

Monday:
7:00-10:00
Tuesday:
7:00-10:00
Wednesday:
7:00-10:00
Thursday:
7:00-10:00
Friday:
7:00-10:00
Saturday:
7:00-10:00
Sunday:
7:00-10:00

2. Do you have any suggestions for future OABS calls? What
topics would you like OABS to discuss/find speakers to talk about?
Fundraising:
I know this is a topic already under much discussion and that we
already have some advertising (for lack of a better term) in the
works, but perhaps we could arange some kinds of fundraising
activities. I know that Ohio seems to be the state for blind
musicians, so perhaps a concert could be aranged to raise some money.
That is something that the South Carolina NFB is doing and which I
thought might be a neat idea to try as well.

Education/Self-Advocacy:
This is mostly for the younger students, but perhaps we, the
college-experienced students, could speak on the topic of the
application process and our various dealings with professors and
disability resource people. I included self-advocacy skills here
because they are skills one greatly needs both in college and in the
"real" world. It is worth talking about situations in which
self-advocacy is necessary and discussing the best ways to go about it
without seeming to agressive or demanding.

Technology:
We could arange some sort of OABS-sponsored "tech day" where we have
different technologies (notetakers, computers, IOS devices, scanners,
ID mates, etc) available, say, at different tables. We could assign
people to each table to demonstrate and explain the practical uses of
these technologies. This may already be happening at places like
Clovernook and/or the Cleveland Sight Center, but I think having
students who use the technology on a daily basis do the demonstrations
might be a little more engaging to both students and parents than
having the AT folks at Clovernook do all the talking. I know
something like this happened at convension last november, but as I
recall from what I was told, it wasn't a very long session. We had
something like this back home in Connecticut when I was in high
school, but it was so much less engaging for me and the other students
to listen to an assistive tech instructor ramble about the features of
the technology. I think if we focused less on the features of the
technology and more on how those features are used in a practical way,
that would speak more to people.

I also love Emily's idea of traveling to different states and visiting
their own student divisions. Perhaps we could even make it into a
kind of exchange. In other words, we send a couple people down to,
say, Virginia and they send a couple of their people to us. That way,
we can learn from each other.
