Jody:

I think most hens start laying at 5 to 6 months old. One of my hens is getting
older and only lays a couple eggs a week. The other girls are younger and lay
5 or 6 eggs a week.

In the fall I got 5 young chickens, 3 of which turned out to be roosters! I'm
not suppose to have roosters in the city limits, so Mike got to eat them when
they got big enough. I'm a vegetarian, so didn't eat them. He said they were
very good. Some day I might be able to eat chickens that I raise; I know what
they eat and that they have a good life. I grew up in northwest Arkansas,
which is the poultry capital of the world. Knowing how the poultry is raised
and processed made me not want to eat it.

Do you plan on raising chickens for food too?

This year I will get tomato an pepper plants since I didn't start the seeds on
time. There is a local nursery a couple miles down the road where I like to
buy my plants. They also host a nice little farmer's market on Saturday
morning where I can buy produce that I don't grow. I'm going to have to buy
some egg plant starts too.

I'm building a couple more raised beds so I can plant more. I hope to use them
for the fall garden. Our weather is so warm that I can grow something year
round. I would also like to build a small green house to start my hot weather
seeds in.

I would like to plant a couple more citris trees since mine are getting really
old. They were also neglected before I purchased the proprerty. I will plant
the smaller variety since they are easier to manage.

If your fences were good enough a couple of goats would clear up all your brush!
Goats are also nice companion animals for horses.

I'm so happy that things are going well for you. Please stay in touch.

Nella
