[AutonomousVehicles] Waymo announces custom chip to be used in its Robo Taxis

Waymo announced its first custom in-house silicon designed for its
6th-generation robotaxis, including the Zeekr-built Waymo Ojai.

Key Details

5nm Custom ASIC: Fabricated using TSMC’s 5-nanometer process, the custom
application-specific integrated circuit delivers more than 1,000 TOPS of
machine-learning performance for front-end sensor fusion and real-time
processing.
Sensor Processing: The chip processes raw data simultaneously from 13
high-resolution cameras, 4 LiDAR sensors, and 6 radar sensors. It handles
tasks including temporal denoising for improved low-light vision, dense
transformer models, and sparse convolution models.
Heterogeneous Architecture: Waymo continues to use a hybrid computing
architecture alongside its custom silicon. Its technology partners and
suppliers include NVIDIA, AMD, Micron, Samsung, SanDisk, Socionext, and
TSMC.
Vehicle Integration: The compute system integrates directly with the Ojai’s
liquid-cooling system for reliability in extreme weather conditions. It is
also designed to preserve passenger luggage space and includes dual-engine
redundancy for fail-operational safety.
