[blindkid] graded paper feedback

Dear Sally,
I don't know David enough to say it is him, and while some small part might
be age, it is likely more personality and cognitive ability to relate for
anyone I think...but again this would only be part of it. Of course it has a
huge impact if he has no idea of the feedback. I kind of struggled a bit
with this one. We got Jordan access for awhile as Cindy did with Kyle; then
began to wean him off it as Brandy suggests because in the real world this
will not happen from college professors or in a work environment (except now
the future is here and electronic feedback is becoming more common). Having
Jordan responsible to go to the teacher and have the teacher read the
feedback and explain really, really, helped his advocacy and communication
with adults skills--he also got more feedback because often the notes were
quickly written or just checked wrong, when he made time to sit with the
teacher he got more and better feedback. I also sat with him at home and we
go over all the mistakes--I did this with all my kids. It was the best way
for them to learn, I always had them fix their mistakes, whether it was math
or English or science or what ever.

We went through this with Kyle. I finally put in his IEP that every
communication would be in Braille for Kyle. That meant that a graded
paper had to have comments in Braille. A letter home had to have a
Braille copy attached. The lunch menu even had to be Brailled.
It was made very clear that if Kyle did not get a communication in
Braille, he was not to be held responsible for it. After a few times
of not being 'allowed' to punish for work not being done, the teachers
figured out that they better give everything in Braille. It worked
most of the time.
