Laura,

I discovered that if you paste from one Word document to another,
things like italics are kept but the styles remain the same. If you
copy something from a webpage, however, everything is stripped even
with merge formatting turned on. The only way to retain things like
italics is to check "keep source formatting" which, as had been
extensively discussed, causes huge problems.
