That's a very good point. I think my difficulty lay in the fact that I
expected Braille and had learned no other means of doing mathematics. But
that's just a lack of creativity on my part perhaps. I'm impressed with your
persistence with it.

I am not a PHD student either, though I do hope that I am able to do a PHD
in economics.
I think that Mathematics can be done in class with out Braille. In India,
there are no resources for transcribing Math into Braille and I had to
devise ways to study with out it. 
That said, I also believe that Braille would make any Math student's life
easier.
