[Blindmath] MathType, word and reading existing documents

Hi all,
I have been trying to insert a bold and italicized letter in the displayed equation using LaTeX with the MathType plug-in and Word 2003. I looked up online, and most suggest using the nested command \mathbf\mathit{mySymbol}}, but I have only been able to insert the symbol either bold or italicized, but not both. Is there some way of achieving this in Word 2003 with MathType?
Thanks.

The keyboard command for "Tex Toggle" alt-\
This will switch regular MathType 2d notation to TeX and switch TeX to
regular 2D notation (ie, the answer is "yes"). If someone types math in
using the Word math editor (which is not accessible), you can use "Convert
Equations" in the MathType ribbon to convert them to MathType and then use
TeX toggle.
