[Blindmath] Central Access Reader (C.A.R)

Hi,

I am new to accessible math and have gotten several helpful tips here.
Frankly, it is due to this list that I have an understanding of what is
available and that I know Infty Reader from Equation Editor from MathML. I
have problem sets and handouts that are Word documents with math created in
equation editor. I understand that I can read these using CAR. But I
installed CAR and it doesn't seem to be working with JAWS 16. I haven't dug
in too much, but just wondering if somebody could tell me 1) is CAR
accessible with JAWS 16 and 2) if so, any ideas on where I might find hot
keys or instructions on how to use it?

Somebody mentioned to me that I may be able to export the content to a
webpage where JAWS can read MathML. Does anybody know how to do this? And,
is it correct that there is no way to have JAWS read the math from equation
editor inside MS Word? If not, that'd be a great thing for them to work on.

Thanks for any help. Learning international finance and macroeconomics and
learning how to use these tools all at once is proving to be a heavy lift! I
really appreciate all the help and advice.

Hi Rebecca,

I used this tool and this method, just as you describe. I'm copying CAR on
this, as they will be very happy to see this. I'm sighted, and my job is AT
support. So I help convert math into accessible documents; CAR is one tool I
use along with MathType. I also use Infty's OCR engine (Infty Reader).

I needed to use CAR's export to HTML because the MathType software doesn't
work on the Mac -- it will operate just fine on a mac and let you input
equations, and get MathML. However, you cannot export/publish an HTML page
out of the MathType running on a mac, that will work for a screenreader. I
tested this using a virtual Windows environment on the Mac, and still got
the same bug. I called Design Science, and worked over the phone with them
and they were suprised and said that I had found a bug. So, for now,
MathType on a PC will in fact publish HTML pages with MathML. If you want to
use MathType on a mac, you will need to save the doc, and then open it with
CAR, and use CAR to export the sucessful HTML with MathML.
