[Blindmath] Computing applications

Thanks to all the great advice and pointers from so many of you on this list. I have spent some time reading reviews and descriptions of a number of the math computing apps you have recommended. I just cannot squeeze enough time out of my day to use any of them in any depth, but the reviews/descriptions indicate that Octave and Maxima are the two applications I should recommend for workshop sessions at Summer University. If anybody strongly disagrees, I would appreciate hearing.
