[BlindMath] My Math Labs Accessibility

Justin,

My son had to use this product and for that reason I had already looked at
Pearson's accessibility page which can be found at this link
https://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com/northamerica/mymathlab/accessibilit
y/ It looks like depending on your book's publication date, some of the
question have description available. However it also notes that there can
be known problems with the screen reader.

My advice would be to take the class without it. If that does not work, the
Accessibility department may be able to work out some one on one tutoring
for you in the Math Tutoring department if your college has one. This is
what they did for my son. The DRC has an informal relationship with the
tutoring department where he could go to the Math tutoring department and
get some help. Once a week it was one on one. The other days, he did his
homework there so is he needed something described a tutor could help. Then
he had a reader for the tests.

I have seen my son's DRC provide audio description for the Math Images in a
different students book. That could be another option that might be
helpful. Sorry I can't be more help.

Mary

Having just looked at LaTeXml for my own purposes, it's interesting in that
it expands and applies the TeX macros, strives to preserve the structure of
the document (not just the presentation), and includes support for a variety
of LaTeX packages.

I've installed it and plan to experiment over the weekend.

These days, I need to be able to deliver documents in multiple formats,
including, but not limited to, typeset output (e.g., PDF), thus reliable
tools for generating HTML are a necessity. I've also been using Pandoc, but
having the flexibility and control over presentation offered by TeX as well
as the option of generating HTML output would be a desirable combination.

Hi there,

I am an accessibility technician at Portland Community College, and a
lurker on this list. We have a student who has very low vision, and is
taking an Elementary Functions class. We have an Orion TI-84 Plus Talking
Graphing Calculator available for loan, but the instructor strongly
recommends a calculator with a computer algebra system. The TI-Nspire CX
and student software is recommended for this course.

I'm not sure if the instructor requires a handheld device, or if software
would be acceptable.

Can anyone give me suggestions?

Thank you!
Lisa

Hi there!

My name is Justin Heard, and I am taking pre-calc this fall for
college. I found out last week that the college professor uses Math
Labs, which from my understanding is mostly online. I have
accessibility concerns, mainly about looking at images. How am I
supposed to understand complex graphs if they're on the screen,
besides hiring a reader? Even though I'm blind, I am a visual learner,
and benefit greatly from seeing tactile images. Besides that, is the
interactive material accessible? Will I be able to read Nemeth braille
if it is presented in a digital format? Will I be able to find the
appropriate symbols for each math problem?

Me and the disability office are concerned. There is one course
offered that does not use Math Labs, which could be a better option.
I'm majoring in Special Education, so this should be the only math
class I have to take besides learning how to teach basic math to
students. The class that does not use Math Labs is a basic course, and
should not be taken as a foundation for college algebra, which
shouldn't affect me. I'm not great at math anyway, so maybe this other
class would be a better option anyway. but it feels like a waste of
time.

Please help.

Never heard of an accessible handheld CAS device.
Personally, I use Wolfram Alpha as a CAS through a custom Skype bot I wrote.
It is not publicly released yet though, and has limitations.

Thank you, Bill. Yep, so far, I am coming up empty on finding such a device.

I don?t think such a device exists because few blind people do math beyond
the k-12 level.
