[BlindMath] Support for MathML in browsers/screen readers

Here's a list of screen reader-based MathML implementations of which I am aware, to start the discussion:

iOS/VoiceOver/Safari (speech and Nemeth Code braille) - I think there are navigation commands, based on testing carried out a few years ago.

Mac OS/Voiceover/Safari (and Chrome too?) (speech and non-standard braille representation of mathematical expressions).

Chrome OS/ChromeVox (used to be spoken output with navigation of mathematical expressions - I'm not sure whether it has been integrated back into ChromeVox since the latter was rewritten, hence it may not be currently available).

Linux/Orca/Firefox (speech, I think - not sure of the status of the implementation, as I haven't tested it, despite being an orca user).

Windows/NVDA with Firefox or Chrome - requires MathPlayer plug-in - the only implementation that does: speech and Nemeth Code braille, with navigation support.

Windows/JAWS with Chrome, Firefox or MSIE - speech and Nemeth Code braille, with navigation support

As to quality of the implementations, the easy answer is that they all have their advantages and drawbacks. The situation is complicated, especially in the absence of agreed upon quality criteria. Significant testing would be required to give an up to date and accurate answer.

There is also "native" accessibility support in MathJAX that works with multiple screen readers.

Subject: [BlindMath] Support for MathML in browsers/screen readers

Hi

There has been a discussion about browser/screen reader support for MathML content over on the WebAIM mailing list.
Can anybody give me the quick answer about MathML support? Which browser/SR combinations are the best?
Does installing a browser add-on or some suchmake the experience better?
With assessments moving from paper to the web, we need to ensure web-based math can be encoded in a way that is undersandable to a screen reader user.
Ihave not been keeping up with math for some time now (I ambusy with web and mobile aps accessibility) but my understanding was that MathML support has been inadequate/inconsistent, but I definitely hope that impression is inaccurate. :)Thanks -B
