My daughter writes in LaTex in Word for her classes.

My daughter uses slashes and { } brackets to denote the math. I know there
is a way to also use $ dollar signs.
You will need MathML I believe. And MathType. I can ask her to send you
more info if you like. Some samples might be helpful....
I know this is a very complex topic though and there are probably many
ways, but without an Editor, this is how my daughter is learning.
