[BlindRUG] WriteR save not working as expected

Hi Jonathan,
I started from scratch and followed the instructions in https://r-resources.massey.ac.nz/BrailleRInAction/WriteR.html
I did already have Python 2 installed but not 3 so I called GetPython3() and this worked.
I then called GetWxPython3() and this worked.
Due to this being a Windows machine I don’t usually use for active work R and RStudio were very old so I installed R and RStudio as new, as of today before I did this. Ensuring that I selected the new version of R as that used by RStudio. I am sighted, so I am command from RStudio (I don’t see how this would make a difference).
I installed half of CRAN 😉
TestWX() says:
Your system is using Python 3.12.0
Warning messages:
1: In shell(paste("python", system.file("Python/TestWX.py", package = "BrailleR"))) :
  'python C:/Users/Emma/AppData/Local/R/win-library/4.3/BrailleR/Python/TestWX.py' execution failed with error code 5
2: In .CannotSeeWxPython() :
  Python cannot see the necessary wx module.You need to get that fixed.
But, it successfully opens WriteR.
WriteR works as expected in all other regards.
Unfortunately I am not a Python guru! ☹ I have written limited Python 2 in the past but nothing with a GUI. Please understand I am not expecting a magic fix, I suspect the problem must be wxPython based and I know nothing of this I am afraid.

Best,
Emma

Hello Emma,

I need to know which conditions you are working within.

Specifically, how have you set up WriteR? I have an executable version and the Python source code based version floating around.

I also have various development versions. I’m in desperate need of a Python guru to assist with the developments I have in mind.

Jonathan

Subject: [BlindRUG] WriteR save not working as expected

Hello BlindRUG,
I am having some confusing trouble with WriteR… I have started from scratch with a new install of R and all associated things and still this is happening though it resolved many other issues! In WriteR when I try and save the document, either using keyboard shortcuts or menus, it does not save. When I run Save As it brings up a window and asks for a filename etc. as expected and there is no error but it also doesn’t save. The only way I can save is by quitting WriteR. When I do this it asks me if I want to save and if I say yes then it will then save the document. However, this leads to a lot of quitting and re-opening the document! This interrupts the workflow of being able to save, render, view. Is this something anyone has seen before? It is quite puzzling and I don’t know where to start with what it could be.
I am about to introduce WriteR to a student and I am hoping they don’t meet a similar issue! I will update whether they do or not and any differences I can see between the systems if I can.
Thanks,
Emma
