[Blindtlk] "Its not safe for someone who can't see"

Hi all,

Don't forget the NFB here. The Federation is the leading
advocacy group for blind people. So, why not use the NFB's
strong advocacy in your favor? I'm not sure if he only deals with
the government, but you might want to suggest to her to call or
email John Paré at the national center. He's the director for
strategic initiatives, which mainly deals with the government,
but that's where all the Federation's advocacy happens, so it's
worth a try. You can call him at 410-659-9314, extension 2218,
or email jpare at nfb.org. She (and Penny, for that matter) could
also contact her state affiliate or chapter President. Gary, is
the woman in question involved with the Federation?

Hi Guys,

I would first applaud Gary's suggestion. I would first advise
her to ignore the ridiculous demand. It doesn't even merit a
response in my opinion. If they push it, however, and persist
and continue to demand, then I would definitely get a civil
rights agency or an attorney involved.

Hi, All;
I wouldn't even try to get anything from a doctor. I'd
contact the
Civil Rights Commission or an attorney. We weren't sent here to
save the
world and the only educating this management need is education
about the
law.
I've read all these posts and I'm a bit biased, I realized,
because
advocacy is what I do, but I seem to hear more about education
than about
advocacy. Perhaps ignorance is an excuse in life, but ignorance
of the law
is NO excuse! Martin Luther King said maybe you can't legislate
morality,
but you CAN legislate how to treat people. Stop the education
and get an
attorney.
Sincerely,
Mary

Wonder if she can get a doctor to write how absurd the notion
that
his/her permission would be required for her to have a key that
every
other tenant on the premises is given, just because of blindness.
If
the doctor is really good, they'll add that it's quite fortunate
for
the apartment manager that the letter is from a doctor and not a
lawyer. *grin*

I suspect MY doctor would write such a letter, if asked to do so.
In
fact, he'd be greatly amused to do it! Hers I'm not so sure
about.
But do feel free to give this email to the doctor in question for
possible inspiration! *evil grin*

Our friend now has access to her pool. They gave her a key but
now
want a
doctor's statement. I suggested she ignore them.

Would it matter if you were completely blind? It's not like
seeing
is a
prerequisite for swimming. Not getting lungs full of water seems
to
be the
most primary requirement.
