Joe I built a Heath kit hm102 watt meter back in 1979.  What I did was to 
use the acces leads as a heat sync to insure good electrical connections. 
The only mistake I made on that project was I soldered one pin diode in 
backwards which caused to the meter to read incorrectly.  Fortunately, that 
problem was fixed by unsoldering and resoldering the pin diode the correct
