R.J.,
    If any O&M instructor were to tell me that learning any sort of 
independent travel technique is a waste of time, I would fire that mobility 
instructor. Sighted guide is certainly one alternative, but we should all 
have the necessary skills to choose which technique is best for us. Of 
course, your O&M instructor will likely say that this is radical thinking! 
It may very well be so, but radical thinking is what put men on the moon!
