[Blindtlk] labeling stoves and ovens

Chris,
There are as many ways to label stoves/ovens as there are appliances. The
important thing to remember is that whatever you do, if you have a lot of
sighted folks in your household, you will want to make sure that whatever
you use will not keep them from being able to read. This is almost always
the case. For fun, this last move, since both Aubrie and I are blind, I had
my friend put small dots cut from the sticky Velcro on the numbers. When my
husband went to turn on the oven the first time, he about went crazy
realizing that he couldn't read the numbers because they were covered with
Velcro. For us, it's like a phone pad without the star and pound keys. We
got a great laugh out of that one and he has since learned to adapt--trying
to prepare for possible vision loss? The other thing I like to do, though,
is to put Braille labels in clear labeling tape either above or below
different functions such as broil, convection bake, bake and so on. As you
might guess, abbreviating is generally necessary for these labels. This way,
you can
Be like everyone else and not have to use your memory to know where broil
is. They also make bump dots in a variety of colors, including clear,
So you won't have to cover up the numbers as I naughtily have done. You can
put dots on as many or as few of the numbers as you wish as well. First
thing, you need to talk with your mom, I'm guessing, and evaluate just what
will work out the best. They also make stuff you can squeeze on that will
have to dry for about 24 hours. Puff paint is an example of this and "High
Marks," has been sold in the ILA catalog.

If that's TMI, forgive me but I hope it is helpful to you or anyone else
needing to get some of that labeling done! Have fun cooking!
Regards,
Bonnie Lucas

Subject: [Blindtlk] labelling stoves and ovens

Hi everyone,

I am trying to develop a system for labelling the stove and the oven in our
kitchen. Since this will be the first time I have labelled a stove/oven, I
don't really know what system of labelling will work best for me. So, I'm
wondering how you label your stoves and ovens. I'm particularly interested
in how you label the controls for the burners and the oven? For example, how
do you know when you have turned the knob on your oven to 350 degrees when
you are preheating an oven? When I went to the Buddy Program at the
Louisiana Center for the Blind (LCB,) the controls on our stove/oven were
labelled with Wicki Sticks which were placed above each degree mark (325
degrees, 350 degrees, etc) and we had to know where the mark we were looking
for was. There are probably many systems for labelling stoves, so I'm just
trying to get an idea of what you use so I can determine what works best for
me. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Chris
