[Blindtlk] Fixing things with glue or rubber cement

Hi, a very good question.

For years I have used an item you can buy at any hardware counter called
Goop. It comes in a tube and you can get household, marine, and I think the
other category is ceramics, not remembering.

The beauty of it is that it is thick, not runny like some glues, and will
stay put where you want it.

When I'm ready to glue, I bring the tube, the item I want glued, and a paper
towel.

Make sure surface to be glued is free from any dirt or other substance such
as lint or hair.

Expose the surface you want to glue, and, before gluing, do a dry rehearsal,
touching where you want glued to make sure you can get to it easily enough
and where you want to glue.

Then, I place a dab on my finger and gently run it over the area I want to
adhere. Then, if you need to you can do a minor spreading motion, like
spreading peanut butter with your finger.

When you are satisfied the glue is spread thoroughly enough, apply pressure
and holed for at least 30 seconds to form the bond.

Immediately with the paper towel, scrub substance off fingers and any extra
on tube and from surface of item you just glued. If you can't do this right
away, the best way to get it off your fingers is by repeated brisk rubbing.
This substance will feel rubbery and ball up as you scrub it off. Water
does not help, and if you can't get it off, you will feel a temporary
residue on your fingers, but does not last long. WD 40 is also good at
getting off any leftover.

It takes a good 24 hours for the bond to set, but the adherence is great. I
have used it on everything from shoe soles to ceramics, and lots of other
things I can't even name, they are so numerous.

I'll be interested to see others' techniques.

Judy

Hi all,
The sole of my shoe started to separate today, prompting this
question. As a blind person, if you need to use a substance like
SuperGlue or rubber cement to patch something, how do you apply it and
know if you're using the right amount without touching the area and
potentially getting glue all over your fingers? I'd like to avoid an
unfortunate mishap.... Thanks for any wisdom!
Arielle
